We are Fero and Johanna, and in 2023 (along with our dogs, rabbits, chickens, and rooster) we moved from the Netherlands to Slovenia in search of more nature, space, and peace. We first visited Slovenia on vacation in 2018, and the country never let go of us. Eventually, we found our dream home, “Karavla.”
The house had been empty for a few years before we bought it, so we had to do a lot of repairs (like fixing frozen pipes) and maintenance. Little by little, the house is being renovated, while we’re also trying to preserve its authentic mountain house atmosphere (called koča in Slovenia)
The house is named “Karavla,” which means it was once a military base for border control. While that’s no longer the case, the name is still well known among the locals. We also received a nameplate for the house.
That’s why we decided to continue with this name. Later, the house was used by the mountaineering association and, when the Kobla ski resort was still active, as rental apartments and a restaurant/party venue (hence the local popularity)
Karavla is located in the village of Ravne v Bohinju, in the municipality of Bohinj, a green valley where you are embraced by nature. A vacation paradise for those who love active and adventurous holidays but also value peace. All of this is at the foot of Triglav National Park. There are many opportunities for hiking, biking, stand-up paddling, kayaking, skiing (in the winter), and much more!
Starting in 2025, we’re ready to rent out the first apartments. We want to share with you the peace and space that can be found here. Apartmaji Karavla is an ideal choice for nature lovers, outdoor enthusiasts, and/or sports lovers who are also looking for rest and relaxation. Our location is perfect for exploring the Bohinj region (or actually, all of Slovenia, since it’s a small country), no matter the season. We also love to get out and will gladly recommend beautiful spots. We also live in Karavla, ensuring a calm and respectful environment (photo of house in the snow).
Our house is in the middle of the forest, at an altitude of 808 meters. It’s perfect for enjoying the silence, peace, and space. However, in just 5 minutes (by car), you’re in Bohinjska Bistrica, where you can shop (2 supermarkets), refuel, and also enjoy a nice meal.
From the house, you step straight into nature. With a view of the Julian Alps, every turn is a surprise. The mountains stay the same, but every day the view is different! A hiking trail to the Orožnova Koča mountain hut (and further) starts just 50 meters from the house. It’s also the perfect base for visiting Lake Bohinj, Savica Waterfall, Vogel Cable Car/Ski Resort, Lake Bled, Vintgar Gorge, Ljubljana, Kranjska Gora, Vrsič Pass, and more (photo of Triglav view in the snow).
